Will 4D plates still be legal?
Lately, various automotive media platforms have featured interviews with law enforcement regarding their standpoint on 3D and 4D number plates, sparking some concern among owners of these replacement plates. It seems more regulations governing car modifications are emerging.
The reassuring news is that as of September 2021, 3D and 4D number plates remain legally acceptable. However, there are nuances to consider.
Previously, all new number plates, including 3D and 4D, adhered to the BS AU 145d standard until September 2021. Subsequently, the DVLA has mandated a shift to the BS AU 145e standard for new number plates, aiming to enhance plate durability and facilitate law enforcement.
Under the previous regulations, number plates needed to withstand severe weathering, meet specific plastic durability criteria, pass impact and bend tests, and comply with border size guidelines.
The revised rules are largely akin to the former standards, focusing mainly on plate reflectivity and adaptability to the UK’s variable weather conditions.
The DVLA continues to acknowledge compliance with the “old laws.” Therefore, if you purchased a 3D or 4D number plate before September 2021, it remains legal for use. However, any new 3D or 4D plates acquired after this date must adhere to the BSAU 145e standard.
These rule changes aim to maintain number plate visibility, aiding speed traps and ANPR camera detection.
It's crucial to note that while 3D or 4D plates are still permissible, 2D plates designed to mimic 3D effects are illegal under the new BSAU 145e. Previous rules allowed for 3D effects if they didn't obscure the main lettering, but the updated standard prohibits two-tone or 3D effects to improve ANPR tracking.
Further modifications include limitations on advertising space, mandatory inclusion of the supplier’s business details and postcode on the plate, and the requirement for all plates to display "BS AU 145e" in the bottom right corner.
The evolving landscape of number plate regulations may seem daunting, but the recent update maintains the legality of 3D and 4D plates amid these changes.
